Commitment – You’re Either in or You’re Out

commitment

When most people decide to take on a new goal, an internal battle sparks. We’re torn between our current beliefs, a fear of change and avoidance of uncertainty, and the influence of our greater self pulling us up and out of stagnation. War. Our mind drifts on things that distract us. We stop focusing on what we we want and start honing in on all the ways we fear failure. If you want to create success you need to remember that commitment is an all-in game. You have to be courageous enough to see the vision, diligent enough to fight the good fight. Don’t waste time tricking yourself into that ‘moderation’ myth. There’s no such thing as balance when it comes to commitment. As Yoda said, “Do or do not, there is no try.”

I had a client many years back who asked me, “Alida, try to shake my hand…” I reached out and shook his hand. He said, “No, you’re shaking my hand…TRY…” The lesson: you’re either in or you’re out.

When it comes to commitment, people get soft. They convince themselves that there must be balance and avoid working “too hard” in the belief that they may overwork themselves or get overwhelmed along the way. What are they really avoiding?

For the first 20 years of my life I battled obesity and chronic illness. I made many excuses for my wishy-washy attitude only to find my results we mediocre. My identity was nothing more than a sorry brush off of my greatness. I’d accepted failure as a default mechanism and worked really hard to prove myself AS a failure.

Every action, every thought, and every habit, further validated my self belief. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to succeed, it’s that I didn’t believe I was capable, or worthy, hence I could never commit to stick it out.

After many years of clarifying my dreams, and clearing out the mental clutter, I found that I had no one to blame but myself for every mistake I made. My vision was clouded with emotional resistance, my desires influenced by conditioned beliefs. There was no room for exploration or creativity as my path was paved in fear.

So when we talk of commitment, we must be willing and open to be brutally honest with ourselves. Integrity is not just about ignoring haters; it’s a laser focus on our goal, a daily calibration of our vision, and a journey of self-discovery. You can’t just want it; you have to be it. Every thought, action, and habit must align with your commitment.

When you hear someone make excuses, take it as an opportunity to learn more about yourself. Let life inspire you to consistently retune your focus and become more of who you truly want to be. It’s not about avoiding who you used to be, it’s about becoming who you can become.

You see, commitment is a choice that catapults us into a new level of self-awareness. It’s a shout out to the universe that says, “I’m ready to see what I’m truly made of. We aren’t just born for success; we make success our purpose. True, we may have talent and natural gifts, but in the end, it’s what we do with our default programming that matters.

If you truly want to succeed, don’t just half-ass your way through a commitment. Play all-in. Learn to trust yourself enough to find the answers where solutions did not previously exist. Be curious enough to travel down the rabbit hole and search for new ways of creatively expressing yourself. Find opportunities to grow and expand your mind far beyond your fears and personal doubts. Do not waste brain space or energy on battling your choices, be it. Here, in this diligent, disciplined, and truly committed space is where you will KNOW your greatness.
